Standard 8- Assesses: The developing professional understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies.
This was a lesson delivered each for a half hour to six different third grade classes. I had students sit in their table groups and I used the PowerPoint alongside whiteboards and markers to assess student knowledge. This lesson falls under standard eight because I was able to use both a formal and informal assessments because students were able to use their peers for help, it was a race to see which group could put up their boards the quickest. This was also formal because it allowed me to see how what words students knew, what students struggle with more than others, and also assess how they work with their table mates. This was very successful and students reported that they liked the activity and would like to do more activities like the one that I had set up for them, I took this into consideration for the following lessons that I taught. I hope to continue having students enjoy the activities that they are doing, rather than doing the typical book or worksheet learning.
This was presented to my college linguistics class with Kennedy Nelson. We each also demonstrated examples of each way on the board from smiley face to words and words to smiley faces. In this presentation I assessed student knowledge on how to form this language. This is not an easy task, but students need to be challenged to understand that they can figure anything out within a context. The class thoroughly enjoyed this task and it allowed for hands on learning and students were able to feel successful in this made up language. This was informal because students were able to work with a partner to decipher what other people wrote, but formal because they had to report their finding to the class which put this document under standard eight. Students were engaged and excited to participate in this assignment. I believe that it is important to assess students in a way that is engaging and hands on, this is often the best way for students to demonstrate what they have learned.
