Overview:
I am a student at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. I am a cheerleader and pole vault in Track. I also thoroughly enjoy camping and hiking in my spare time! I grew up in a suburb of Denver and later moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where I attended Discovery Canyon Campus, which is a K-12 school.
Where My Motivation as a Teacher Began:
I had the opportunity to take a course in Discovery Canyon's High School program, which allowed me to be a teacher’s assistant for a fifth grade class. I would take students who were struggling with typically math or reading, which were the two subjects that students in this class struggled with the most. One particular student named Olga was born in Russia and Russian is all that was spoken in her household. She struggled with the English language, which made reading extraordinarily difficult for her. I could see that she desired reading to come as easy to her as her peers. I remember one day I spent time with her one-on-one and was asked to help guide her through her assigned readings. Watching the progression that she made daily was really powerful for me. I could tell that she was not only becoming a better reader, but was also beginning to enjoy it. When I was assigned to work with the students struggling in math, she had even told me that she wish she could work with me instead of in the classroom setting. She was truly my first inspiration. She helped make me want teach being able to help and watch a student progress made me feel like this was something I would love to do in the future and see the same progress can be made with multiple students!
Spanish- More than just a Language
As someone who grew up with a natural affluence for language I want to see students gain the same affluence, whether it be naturally or not; even native Spanish speakers can always improve their speech and writing, just as English speakers can. I also want students to understand and learn to fall in love with or at least understand another language. Spanish classes may be a class used to communicate in the Spanish language or as a stepping stone to other languages; I also respect students as global learners. I hope that students will want to continue to study Spanish as a major or minor in college and understand how much of an impact that there will be on any profession that they choose, especially, here in the United States with the rapidly growing population of Spanish speakers.
