Standard 4- Designs Instructional Strategies: The developing professional uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of skills and strategies for critical thinking and problem solving.
This lesson plan was created to cater to different students needs. I realized how simple it is to add various modifications and changes to instruction, but it is not always easy for teachers to follow through with them because it may take more of time and slow the process for other students who are succeeding in the classroom. Having different strategies for learning is of the utmost importance because no two learners are the same and if a student has a disability, these strategies are on to help them complete their work rather than enable them to do their work. I put this under standard four because I plan to use many of these methods and strategies in my future classroom to promote a better learning environment for all students and to encourage their development in critical thinking and problem solving.
I read an article about students with ADHD for my 10 Hour Field Experience and they recommended in the article to avoid singling these students out in class. It is also important to offer structured variety. What I took away from this article is that it is important to give students some choice in how they want to demonstrate what they have learned, such as giving them a sheet with ideas like doing a skit, writing a paper, giving a presentation. This allows students who like consistency to choose the same thing to do each time, while if other students like variety they have the option to choose multiple other means to demonstrate their learning. The last thing I thought that was interested that the student with ADHD recommended was to have students who have any questions while teacher are teaching rather than raising their hand constantly is to have all students write all of their questions and thoughts down and then open it up at the end. This falls under standard four because I now plan to use many more instructional strategies with many different types of learners in mind.
