Standard 5- Manages and Motivates: The developing professional uses classroom management and motivational strategies to create a positive learning environment.
This is my general or ideal system for students. Of course if the school I teach at has their own rules and expectations I will adhere to them and modify my own to fit that mold. This shows how I would like to teach elementary aged students versus students in middle school in high school. I believe that elementary students need to have the rules and expectations laid out for them while older students in middle and high school know their expectations and should be able to create their own as a class.
This is my metaphor for motivational teaching. I want students on the first day of class to be given a puzzle piece (blank paper) when they walk in the door and keep it at their desks until the end of class so that we can discuss why they think each piece might matter. For the last 5 minutes I would have them put their pieces together and we, as a class would come up with a sentence about what it means to be one piece in the puzzle and how the puzzle comes together as a whole. I labeled this under standard 5 because I think this is geared towards motivation because students have to be comfortable in their environment and understand that their ideas and questions are important and that we have to work together, which is where the management plays a role.
