Standard 3- Understands Differences: The developing professional recognizes and provides for individual differences and diversity.
This is a lesson plan created for the Multicultural Fair at Doane for 2015. The topic of this Fair was labeled "Passport to Diversity". I felt like this lesson is great for students of all ages because it is a physical representation of their individual differences and diversity, but in this case taught through different languages. I put this under standard three because it shows that students are both different and diverse and that it is a good thing!
This experience included spending time with a student with a ADHD, as well as, speaking with an ELL teacher. These experiences were very interesting because the student with ADHD is very aware of how he acts and has always acted with people. He tends to be impulsive, and has trouble focusing and concentrating. He gave me multiple ideas to help students with behavioral problems, such as those, that he experienced. In addition the ELL teacher gave me insight to students in an ELL classroom. As ELL also being one of my areas of study I found it particularly interesting the way that she talked about the standards, but she has become an inspiration for me because of her love of teaching, and the success that she sees with students through Crete High School's ELL program. I placed this under standard three because I feel that through this process I have grown to be much more aware of student differences and how to help these students make their differences work best for them.
